May–October · LoggerheadLong before the canals and condominiums, Marco Island was the heart of one of Florida's most sophisticated pre-Columbian civilizations — and the story only gets richer from there.
For over 2,000 years before European contact, the Calusa people inhabited Marco Island and the surrounding waters. They were master fishermen, engineers who built the shell mounds still visible across Southwest Florida, and one of the few pre-Columbian cultures in North America who resisted Spanish conquest for generations. Marco Island's Roberts Bay archaeological sites contain some of the most significant Calusa artifacts ever discovered in Florida.
Pre-Columbian · 2,000+ YearsFrom 1911 to 1947, the Doxsee Clam Company was Marco Island's largest industry — harvesting, steaming, and canning hard clams at a factory that employed most of the island's residents at its peak. When the local clam beds were exhausted, the cannery closed, but the Doxsee family never left. They stayed on Marco, kept fishing, and are still here today — still local, still working the same Gulf waters their great-grandfathers worked over a century ago. Skip went to school with the Doxsee kids. That kind of generational rootedness is what makes Marco Island different from every other barrier island on the Gulf Coast.
1911–1947 · Family Still on Marco TodayIn 1964, the Deltona Corporation — led by the Mackle Brothers — purchased Marco Island and began one of Florida's most ambitious planned developments. They dredged the canal system that defines waterfront living on the island today, created the road network, and laid the infrastructure that would turn a tiny fishing community into one of Florida's most sought-after resort destinations. The first causeway bridge connecting the island was completed in 1969.
1964 · Deltona CorporationMarco Island was incorporated as a city in 1997 — relatively recent for a community of its size and character. The decades between the Mackle development and incorporation were defined by rapid growth, escalating real estate values, and the gradual transformation from a Florida fishing village into a world-class resort destination. Today, it's a city of roughly 17,000 permanent residents — and tens of thousands more who visit or own property here seasonally.
